In addition, members of the energy sector need some money to build new facilities that will replace old stations. Chile ' s production boom has led to a significant increase in its energy needs. Private business came to help: various companies built 29 solar farms and another 15 planned. The construction of power plants was calculated to continue economic growth. But the economy is slowing down around the world, and Chile no longer needs as much energy as stations. The country ' s copper industry consumed most of the energy, and after demand for honey fell, production facilities were no longer able to consume as much energy as they used.
Investors lose money. For example, Acciona SA invested $343 million in the 247 megawatt station project. It's planned to be the largest station in Latin America. The money is invested, but will profit, or at least the funds returned? The head of the company is not too sure.
Lack of infrastructure
